SDG 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Target 11.2: By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons.

Relevant mandate:

Capacity Building and Awareness: Parliaments undertake capacity building activities to improve the understanding of sustainable development issues among parliamentarians and staff. These initiatives involve organizing workshops, trainings, and seminars to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed for effective engagement with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Example: The Oireachtas Éireann, the legislative body of the Republic of Ireland, has the ability to support capacity-building programs and awareness campaigns aimed at educating lawmakers, public officials, and the general public about the adverse effects of corruption and discrimination on inclusivity. These training programs have emphasized the promotion of inclusivity within the realm of public transportation and infrastructure, with a special focus on disabled and older age citizens. By fostering a culture that opposes corruption and prioritizes inclusivity, the Irish legislative body is contributing to the sustainable development of transport infrastructure and fighting for the inclusion of historically marginalized groups.
