SDG 12. Responsible Consumption and Production

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Target 12.2: By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.

Relevant mandate:

Legislative Oversight of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Parliaments can introduce legislation requiring companies to align their corporate social responsibility practices with the SDGs. By mandating transparency and reporting on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, parliaments can encourage businesses to integrate sustainable practices and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.

Example: A good example is the Committee on the Empowerment of Women of the Parliament of India, which in 2016 discussed and started work on compulsory CSR policies for private companies that employ women. These CSR policies would not only protect women from sexual harassment in the workplace and educational institutions, but they would also apply to the informal sector. They would also have jurisdiction over the protection of women in domestic environments.
