SDG 13. Climate Action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Target 13.2: Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.

Relevant mandate:

Public pressure: Parliamentary oversight has the ability to generate public awareness and exert societal pressure to combat corruption. As parliamentary debates and investigations gain media attention, citizens are informed about corrupt activities, enabling them to voice their concerns and call for necessary actions. International firms and governments that have profited from the extraction of fossil fuels are responsible for the adverse climate challenges that many nations in the global south are now facing; this situation can be worsen when bribery is present.

Example: In 2022, the Parliament of Denmark broke ranks with other developed nations and for the first time offered to transfer direct cash payment to global south communities affected by climate change as a form of reparations. This development is now exerting pressure on other parliaments and foreign ministries to follow suit, but it remains to be seen how this topic will develop.
