SDG 15. Life on Land

Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.

Target 15.c: Enhance global support for efforts to combat poaching and trafficking of protected species, including by increasing the capacity of local communities to pursue sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Relevant mandate:

Parliamentary diplomacy: Parliaments can actively contribute to the establishment and enforcement of global benchmarks that promote transparency, integrity, and efficient law enforcement in combating wildlife crime. This includes involvement in the development and implementation of measures that uphold these standards. In particular, developing countries are interested in reducing poaching schemes and improving the state of tropical rain forests – these provide citizens with tourism revenue, food products, and improved health and well-being.

Example:  There is a recent One Forest Summit that was spearheaded by the Parliament of Gabon right after the conclusion of the COP15 in Montreal on December of 2022. By engaging in parliamentary diplomacy, Gabon has showcased the world that not only developed countries can spearhead conservation policy.
