SDG 16. Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.
Target 16.3: Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all.
Relevant mandate:
Confidential Briefings: Under specific conditions, parliamentarians might be provided with confidential briefings from government officials, intelligence agencies, or security services. These briefings can involve classified information or sensitive data concerning national security, foreign affairs, law enforcement, and whistleblower information. The objective behind these briefings is to equip parliamentarians with a thorough comprehension of crucial issues while upholding the importance of maintaining confidentiality.
Strong accountability laws are needed in order to ensure effective and accountable governments; likewise, ensuring the confidentiality and protection of brave citizens, who risk their livelihoods and wellbeing to bring law breakers to justice, is needed to ensure peaceful and inclusive societies.
Example: With the aim of implementing the SDG 16, the Parliament of Morocco ratified novel whistleblower protection policies in 2015 – the Freedom of Information Law and the Conflict-of-Interest Law.
