SDG 2. Zero Hunger
End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
Target 2.a: Increase investment, including through enhanced international cooperation, in rural infrastructure, agricultural research and extension services, technology development and plant and livestock gene banks in order to enhance agricultural productive capacity in developing countries, in particular least developed countries.
Relevant mandate:
Budgetary Allocation: Parliaments have the power to allocate budgets and approve spending plans. They can prioritize funding for programs and initiatives related to the SDGs, ensuring that financial resources are used for the achievement of the sustainable development targets.
Example: At the National Assembly of Zambia lawmakers have advocated for transparency and accountability in the implementation of policies that seek to plant trees as a way of preventing soil erosion and improving water management. These funds in rural infrastructures help to alleviate the food crisis that Zambia is facing due to the destruction of maize crops by flash floods and droughts, weather events that occur more and more often as a result of climate change.
